Transportation Information
Dear Weston Community,
I am writing to inform you that, despite our best efforts, we are having difficulty hiring and maintaining a full complement of bus drivers. This unfortunate situation is not unique to Weston, as we are seeing many local municipalities and private companies facing severe challenges in hiring bus drivers. The strong jobs economy, coupled with the many regulatory requirements placed on bus drivers, have created a crisis hiring situation across the greater Boston area.
To address the situation we have begun collective bargaining with the drivers this fall, well before any other school-related unions. It is our strong belief that once we complete negotiations we will be much better positioned to hire additional drivers. We have also been able to, on a temporary basis, bring back two well-respected retired Weston drivers to assist in filling the gaps to date.
All that being said, due to our current shortage of drivers, on occasion some routes may need to be canceled. We will give affected families as much notice as we possibly can. If your child’s route is going to be canceled, you will receive a phone call, an email and a text message. Please know that we are doing everything we can to cover all of our runs every day, and appreciate your support and patience in this process.
Best,
Dr. Midge Connolly
Superintendent
