Community Spirit

The schools are truly a part of the Weston community. Our district enjoys strong partnerships with groups such as Land’s Sake Farm, the Council on Aging, Climate Control and Rotary International. We instill the value of civic engagement from elementary to high school. From intergenerational cultural programs to scientific mentoring, to community service, our students learn from and give to all of our citizens.

The Administration’s careful management of the budget has earned the confidence of voters, who consistently support the school budgets such that, unlike most other districts, there are no additional fees for the arts, athletics or extra-curricular activities.

All performing arts events are open to the public, with reduced tickets for seniors and military personnel. Our top-ranked music program is often tapped for cultural and civic events; our award-winning Theater Company draws sold-out crowds; student artists are frequently accepted to juried shows, and athletic events are popular community events.

Voters as well as private donors have also supported capital expenditure needs. Facilities and fields are in excellent shape, as the town completes a multi-decade renovation cycle with the last of the school buildings completed in Fall 2014. Our facilities and fields are used extensively by the public for recreation and other uses.

Professional Benefits

Impressive Faculty Peers

Weston teachers and specialists are well educated. 94% have earned masters and doctoral degrees and, among teachers who have post-graduate degrees, 65% have studied at least one year beyond the Master’s.

Professional Growth

Beyond the training our teachers have upon entry, continued professional growth is very important in the Weston Public Schools. New teachers are paired with mentors and participate in regular orientation meetings in their first year. The Weston Professional Development Academy (WPDAC) provides on-site opportunities for professional development. In addition, the school calendar incorporates professional development days for teacher workshops and focused learning for Professional Learning Communities. The district also supports summer professional development work and course reimbursement up to $1,500 per year.

Attractive Compensation and Benefits

Weston employees are part of a group that receives health insurance through the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Group Insurance Commission (GIC). Salaries and benefits are competitive with neighbor towns. Non-resident faculty and staff may, under certain cirmcumstances, enroll their children in Weston Public Schools and pay tuition.

Demographic Diversity

Learning Diversity

WPS educates children with special needs from the age of 3 to 22. Since 1999, Weston Windows, an integrated pre-school, with classrooms at Woodland and Country Schools, supports the youngest students with special needs.

The Bridge and GOAL programs at Weston High School support the older student as they prepare for transition to independent living. 4% of our students do not speak English as a first language. Our English Language Learning (ELL) Program supports these students, who speak 14 mother tongues. Summer enrichment and tutoring provide all our students ways to boost performance.

Racial and Ethnic Diversity

Since 1967, Weston has participated in the METCO voluntary desegregation program that brings students of color from Boston to suburban schools. Out total student population includes ~37% students of color. ~8.3% of the total student population are METCO students of color, and a~29% of the total student population are Weston-resident students of color, including 17% Asian American students. Weston students represent all the major religions and hail from every continent except Antarctica. Our Global Exchange program brings high school students from different parts of the world to live and learn with us and encourages our students to travel abroad. Our staff of color is 12% of the total and Weston is part of the Greater Boston Schools Human Resource Network (GBSHRN), a group that is committed to increasing faculty diversity. Their job fair is held in March.

Economic Diversity

Weston is one of the wealthiest communities in the Commonwealth, but there are still many students who face economic hardship. The district supports these students with free or subsidized lunches, scholarships and other assistance.

Inspired Learning

Educating the Whole Child

We believe in educating the whole child through academics, athletics, the arts, social competency programs and community service. Extra-curricular activities and late buses that facilitate participation are free of charge.

Advanced Technology

Faculty use advanced instructional technologies including projection, wireless networking, document cameras, and online resources, with support from Educational Integration Specialists, on site technical personnel, and technical training opportunities. The Middle School has a full 1-to-1 technology program. The High School has a Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) program and a Global Education Conference Center that enables long-distance learning.

Parental Involvement

Weston parents, actively engaged as volunteers through the Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) and as donors, greatly enhance the educational experience for our faculty and our students.

The Weston Education Enrichment Fund Committee (WEEFC), a permanent subcommittee of the school committee founded in 1954, enriches learning at every level of the district. Over $6M has been raised, funding curriculum, professional development and technology.

Weston Boosters raises funds for Athletics and other extra-curricular activities. Despite our small size, Weston wins many division and state championships and sends many athletes to collegiate varsity programs.
