Seeking Third Parent Advisor for Class of 2022

February 24, 2020/in High School, School Newsletter /by shayj

Looking for an opportunity to work closely with the Class of 2022 students? If so, please consider being a Parent Advisor! Each class has two Parent Advisors who work closely over the four years of high school with elected Class Officers and two Faculty Advisors. The current Class of 2022 PA’s are Beth Backer and Cynthia Brisky. At the end of sophomore year, a third Parent Advisor joins the team. Parent Advisors work closely with Faculty Advisors to mentor elected class officers for planning and carrying out social events, community service and fundraising while building a sense of school spirit and community in their graduating class.

Below is a description of the role and a list of activities for each year. If you are interested in joining Beth and Cynthia for the next two years, please contact the WHS PTO Co-Chairs, Lisa Green and Gail Palmer. Please include previous involvement in our community and schools, along with the ages of your children, and any other information you wish us to consider. We look forward to hearing from you!

WHS Parent Advisors Job Description

Parent Advisors work closely with Faculty Advisors and elected class officers to build a sense of school spirit and community in their graduating class.  Parent advisors mentor student leaders as they take increasing responsibility for planning and carrying out social events, community service, and fundraising activities for their entire class over the course of four years (or two years in the case of the added PA by junior year for each class).

Each class commits to a community service project that usually lasts all four years.  Classes may hold holiday parties and other social events.  All events are expected to be self-funded.  Classes also do fundraising toward their graduation overnight trip.  A list of traditional events is list below.  Parent advisors may plan gatherings for class parents, and should involve other parents in planning, carrying out, and supervising class activities.

Parent advisors

  • meet weekly with class officers and faculty advisors, current schedule is on Wednesday mornings at 8 AM,
  • serve as chaperones at all class events,
  • meet monthly with the Chair and Co-Chair of the WHS PTO, parent advisors from all other classes, and the High School Student Activities Coordinator, and
  • communicate regularly with parents (usually via the PTO membership toolkit message board) and involve other parents in class activities.

Two parent advisors are appointed by the High School Co-chairs of the PTO at the end of the 8th grade year to serve four years until graduation.  An additional advisor may be appointed at the end of sophomore year or beginning of junior year.  Parent advisors should be experienced community volunteers.  It is desirable to have at least one advisor with an older student going through (or gone through) WHS, so they are familiar with events and customs.  An exceptional working relationship between the parent advisors is necessary for successful execution of the job.

Weston High School-Parent Advisor Responsibilities:

Parent Advisors assist Faculty Advisors with the following responsibilities:

Participation:  To promote student leadership and encourage the involvement of the entire class in class events, projects, and fundraisers

  • Community Involvement:   To foster community involvement by recruiting parents to assist with chaperoning class events and engaging in volunteer work
  • Guidance:  To assist the class and its elected officers in carrying out activities which bring the class together
  • Meetings:  To meet regularly with class officers and faculty advisors as well as to attend the monthly PTO Parent Advisor Meeting with Parent Advisors, the Director of Student Activities, and the PTO Chairpersons in an effort to maintain an updated record of class events/fundraisers
  • Awareness:  To keep up on major events occurring at the High School
  • Communication:  To communicate regularly with class Faculty Advisors to discuss student/parent concerns and issues surrounding class events, fundraisers and projects
  • Chaperones:  To serve as chaperones at all class events

Specific Events for Each Year

Below are the events that have been hosted by each class in previous years.  Use this as a guide for ideas.  The only mandatory items are in bold.  The rest of the events are traditional but optional and should be discussed with your officers, advisors and classes.
