WHS Athletic Update

Hello Everyone,

I hope you all are well. As promised, I wanted to get back to you once we (DCL AD’s) met with both the Superintendents and Principals within our league regarding the Fall Athletic Season which happened yesterday.  Although there are still a few things that need to be finalized, here is what I can share with you at this time.

  • DCL Fall 1 Sports (Sept.18, 2020) – Boys & Girls Cross Country, Field Hockey, Boys & Girls Soccer, Golf
  • DCL Fall 2 Sports (Feb. 22, 2021) – Football, Girls Volleyball, Crew
  • Fall 1 Season will start on Friday, Sept. 18th
  • We will ONLY play against those schools in the DCL Small (Bedford, Wayland, Boston Latin & Waltham) for all Fall 1 sports. Schools were placed in cohorts and will remain in cohort throughout season.
  • We will play ONLY on Wednesday’s & Saturday’s (Golf 2x’s per week Mon-Fri due to course availability & XC only on Saturdays).
  • We will play against the same school both games during each week in all sports. For Example: Wes vs. Bed @ Weston Wednesday / Wes vs. Bed @ Bedford Saturday. On Wednesdays we will play only VARSITY games. JV teams will stay home and play intra-squad game. On Saturday both V & JV play against DCL opponent (split venues).
  • Yesterday the MIAA released their safety modifications for each sport – they are extensive. Each of our varsity coaches have received them.
  • Each coach will have their tryout/practice schedule finalized for the first few days of the season by next week and will share once finalized.

***I would like to set up a Zoom Meeting for each sport on Tuesday, September 8th (Similar to our Player/Parent Meetings) to review with all parents/student-athletes of each sport the new safety protocols, new sport modifications, what our schedule will look like, bus needs during the season, player and spectator expectations, etc. I have put the following schedule together:

Misc. Information:

*The MIAA voted on and approved out-of-season coaching for this year only.  The goal and overall focus of our (DCL) out-of-season coaching will be on engaging students for their mental health and well-being. No coach will be looking at this as an opportunity or a way to “gain an edge” for the coming season. This will be about offering opportunities for student-athletes to socialize in a setting which we have lacked for several months now. These will be totally voluntary and there is a chance not all coaches will be able to take advantage of this, but please be aware that sports outside this Fall 1 season will have the opportunity to meet 1 to 2 times per week throughout the off- season. Student-Athletes “in-season” will be required to attend all team practices and games and cannot miss an “in-season” practice or game to attend an out of season practice. We will work hard to ensure any conflicts are kept to a minimal and all safety guidelines will be adhered to. (Please Note: Although the MIAA & DCL has approved out-of-season coaching, WPS will need to approve this before moving forward. Once a determination has been made on the direction we will go with out-of-season coaching I will be sure to communicate to all. I just wanted all to be aware of this possibility).

*I have purchased Weston Athletics masks for all “in-season” student-athletes and coaches. These will be given out the first week of tryouts/practices. These are going to be required for each sports this fall so I wanted to make sure we all have the same high quality mask.

I understand this is an overload of information, but I think it is important to keep all our student-athletes and parents as informed as possible during this unprecedented time. I am sure you will have a lot of questions. During each sport Zoom Meeting on 9/8, I will elaborate on much of what I have laid out above. However, should you have any pressing questions please do not hesitate to reach out to me via email or phone. My office number is 781-786-5845.

Go Cats!
