Soil Contamination Update

Last summer as part of the preparation of the site plan for the new Field School, random tests were conducted on soil behind the existing Field School. A few of the samples indicated arsenic above acceptable levels and one reached the level of extremely hazardous.  It is believed that arsenic was utilized as a pesticide when this was an agricultural field in the early 20th century.

Working within the protocols established by the Environmental Protection Agency, we immediately cordoned off the test pits and a surrounding buffer zone. Since then we have continued to test to determine the geographic extent of the contaminated site. This time intensive effort has revealed an effected area that encompasses almost a third of the field behind the Community Center/Field School. After each round of test results, the fenced area has been expanded based on specific findings.  After the initial tests, Green Seal has overseen the process. Their reports and accompanying graphics have been posted on the Field School Project website.

Given the extent of the off limits area coupled with the recent recommendation from Green Seal, we are closing the entire field to recess and/or recreational use as of Thursday, February 2, 2012.

We are currently issuing an RFP (Request for Proposal) to solicit bids for the removal of 1 1/2 feet of top soil. This remediation process will take place after schools close this summer, most likely two weeks in early July. Until that time, the grass will not be mowed to minimize dust and prevent use.

As we finalize plans for the remediation, we will hold an informational session for the community.  In the interim, Field School Principal Matt Lucey will hold a coffee on February 8th (9:00 AM in Field School cafetorium) to discuss alternative plans for recess and answer any questions.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me via phone (781-786-5210) or email.

1:1 Initiative at Middle School

Last year a small cohort of seventh grade students and three of their teachers participated in a pilot focused on utilizing a tablet to enrich and enhance teaching and learning. After reviewing the overall positive response, as measured in a survey of parents, teachers, students, and assessed by our consultant Dr. Damian Bebell from Boston College; and, having discussions with the Middle School faculty we decided to expand the pilot to the entire grade seven this year.

Our consultants are in the process of reviewing the mid-point data, but early indications are that these results are also very positive. If you are interested in learning more about this initiative, there are several public sessions that will take place in the next couple of weeks:

Friday, February 3, 9:00 AM
Middle School Library
Middle School Principal’s coffee will feature seventh grade teachers demonstrating curricular use of the tablets. Principal Gibbons will also answer questions.

Monday, February 6, 7:00 PM
Case House
School Committee Meeting (see agenda)
Dr. Lee McCanne will discuss preliminary results from the mid-point survey and plans for expanding the project to grades 7 and 8 in 2012-2013.
