Supporting METCO

In the fall of 2014, Governor Deval Patrick made what are called 9c cuts to the current budgets of a number of state funded programs, including METCO.  Fast forward several months, Governor Charles Baker made additional 9c cuts to METCO as he responds to the current state budget deficit.

While METCO Superintendents appreciate the challenges of balancing budgets, we ask:

1) Why was METCO singled out for cuts significantly higher than other programs (closer to 7% as opposed to the 1 or 2% other programs received)?

2) Why target a long standing successful program that addresses issues of race and educational segregation at a time when it is needed more than ever in our nation?

I was a guest on the February 26 Greater Boston, WGBH news show, discussing the 9c cuts along with another strong supporter of the METCO program, Jim Stergios of the Pioneer Institute.  Our shared concerns are about  this fiscal year as well as next year.

Weston Public Schools will have a group of students, faculty, administrators and School Committee members at the State House on March 19 to advocate for the needs of METCO in next year’s budget.  Weston Public Schools lost a total of $66,383, funds needed for staffing and transportation.  Similarly to the state budget, ours has also been hit by costs of snow removal, among other unanticipated increases.

“…[I]ncorporating…innovative technology may not change the way classes are taught this year, but it has started a revolution in how learning and teaching are being conceptualized.
