WPS Teacher Profile -

Mary Liu

Mary Liu has been teaching biology at Weston High School for five years. Growing up in Ohio, she came east to pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees at Harvard University.  Last year she was honored with a Goldin Foundation Award for Excellence in Education.

What are two things you like best about being a teacher?

  1. The job is fun! I get to be creative and I get to share my love of science!
  2. The students. There is no replacement for the relationships teachers get to build with students over the years. I have awesome students.

What is one thing you have accomplished in your life that might surprise your students?

I am learning to speak Portuguese.

What took you “grit” to learn?

Organic Chemistry.

What was it like designing the On Ramp course through edX for students to take on line?

It was challenging! It was hard to design a course for students whom I didn’t interact with on a daily basis. The normal daily adjustments and cues that you get from a classroom full of students I had to pre-anticipate and incorporate into the course. All in all, I think it will prove to be a great resource to get students ready to take an AP Biology course during the year.

If you could give a message or mantra to students as they graduate, what would it be?

Try it!  (Give it a real chance!) You never know what you’ll end up loving. I appreciate the people in my life who have pushed me into trying things outside of my norm.

What actress would you like to play you in Weston High School: the Movie?

Lucy Liu

If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be?

If I wasn’t a teacher, I’d definitely still be in the science field.  I loved working in the Community Lab at Biogen Idec so I might have gone into the biotech industry.

What is my favorite school lunch?

Pizza (and the Broccoli Salad).

“…[I]ncorporating…innovative technology may not change the way classes are taught this year, but it has started a revolution in how learning and teaching are being conceptualized. I’m excited to see what is to come from both students and teachers.” — Mary Liu, WHS science teacher and creator of edX’s “Ramp Up for AP Biology”
