Middle School Foreign Language

In a special morning meeting on Tuesday, April 15, the School Committee reviewed two under enrolled grade seven courses for next year, Mandarin I and French I.  Student sign-ups for both are less than the required twelve students.

Chair Danielle Black read a statement (see School Committee Chair Statement) that provided important information about this process. With many parents in attendance, the School Committee raised questions with Foreign Language Director Cort Mathers and Principal John Gibbons on student and parent outreach, on line selection, and viability of initial cohorts as students enter and move through the High School Foreign Language program.

Opening the meeting to parent comments, the School Committee heard many cogent arguments for maintaining four languages, but also concerns about the current practice of course selection.  At the end of 90 minutes of discussion, the School Committee took a vote to run both courses next year and to maintain the language sequence for these students through  high school.  However they also asked that a focus of the Foreign Language Program Review be on the issue of the viability of running four languages in our current model.
