Teaching Mathematics

Jean Reynolds, Early Math Intervention teacher, and Riola Lazo, METCO Academic Liaison at Woodland and Country Schools, are featured in the December 2014/January 2015 edition of Teaching Children Mathematics, a professional journal published by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM).

The article, entitled “Jump as Far as You Can,” focused on their lessons and teaching strategies involving a measurement problem.  The problem explored first and second grade Common Core concepts such as estimating, measuring by iterating units as well as comparing and contrasting lengths and units. The article also features photographs of Weston students and their work.

Congratulations to Mrs. Reynolds and Ms. Lazo!

“…[I]ncorporating…innovative technology may not change the way classes are taught this year, but it has started a revolution in how learning and teaching are being conceptualized. I’m excited to see what is to come from both students and teachers.” — Mary Liu, WHS science teacher and creator of edX’s “Ramp Up for AP Biology”
