Update on School Security

Security Update

The Administrative Council (Superintendent, Assistant Superintendents, Director of Technology, Director of Student Services, and the five principals) met with Mr. Mitch Finnegan, Director of Health and Physical Education; Mr. Jerry McCarty, Director of Facilities; Mr. Gary Jarobski, Assistant Director of Facilities; Chief Steven Shaw and Lt. Danny Maguire of the Weston Police Department on Tuesday to review our current security protocols and discuss a long term plan.

 

Principals shared input from faculty, staff, students and parents.  We then decided that the school doors will remain locked, but we hope to have an intercom system up and running at each door within the month.  We are also working on a card swipe system for each front door so that our faculty and staff can enter the buildings at will.

 

We plan to hire a security consultant, a person who worked with us several years ago on a video project with the FBI.  That project created a video/mapping system that allows our emergency personnel to quickly access each school’s layout. The consultant comes highly recommended, and we plan to have him visit each school with me, the school principal and Chief Shaw and then have him develop a list recommendations.  We will review these recommendations and draft a plan, which will then be shared with all members of the school community for their input.  The goal will be to then finalize a budget and  seek funding from the Town.

 

We have already begun the process of identifying locations for cameras, which are now in place at the high school science wing and are planned for the new Field School.  They will be added to other schools.

 

We will also conduct safety drills in each school with the police in the next couple of months. The police have our emergency plans and protocols already and have overseen such drills in the past.  In addition, we have been training all of our administrators and some of our teacher leaders in emergency protocols as prescribed by the federal government. We applied for and were granted funding for this and will have another round of such training in the hopes of reaching as many members of the faculty and staff as possible.  Mr. Finnegan will be working with faculty and staff to coordinate and schedule such FEMA training.

 

Faculty, guidance counselors and adjustment counselors have provided support for all of our students. We consult regularly with Human Relations Services (HRS) in Wellesley for support, suggestions, and guidance.
