Mathematics in the Elementary Schools

Elementary mathematics is more than arithmetic. Mathematics includes the study of numbers and operations, algebra, geometry, measurement and statistics and probability. Through a broad range of content in a variety of contexts, students make connections between the mathematics taught in school and the world in which they live. Students create, investigate, analyze and predict as they learn mathematics in an active, constructive process. Mathematics should make sense to students and they should be able to communicate their understanding to others. Students must be able to apply skills to a new situation. Technology is used in ways that support mathematics learning for all students.
