School Committee Considering New Policy re: Physical Education Requirements for 12th Graders

On February 28, 2022 the School Committee held a regular online meeting in which they discussed COVID-19 Response, masks becoming optional in school buildings, the social studies department, the budget for next year, and other business.

They also discussed a draft of a proposed policy that would allow student-athletes who complete a full season of sports during their senior year to count that activity as fulfilling their physical education requirements for their senior year. This can be referred to as “sports substitution.”

Mitch Finnegan–Director of Health, Wellness, and Physical Education–also joined the meeting to speak to the unique value of physical education for all K-12 students including seniors. Click here to see his slide presentation.

The school committee is expected to vote on the policy on March 7, 2022. If approved, it will be as a pilot program, with the intention to review program data after 1 or 2 years, to re-evaluate the policy going forward.
