League of Women Voters Civics Bee at WHS on 4/7 at 2pm

April 3, 2019/in High School, School Newsletter /by shayj

Teams from Sudbury, Wayland, Weston and Concord-Carlisle will vie for the League of Women Voters Civics Bee trophy on April 7.

The 11th annual Civics Bee will start at 2 p.m. at Weston High School. It is sponsored by the Leagues of Women Voters in the towns, and Weston is this year’s host. The Bee is free and open to the public.

The special theme section of this year’s Bee is the Bill of Rights. The main focus of the Civics Bee remains to challenge the teams’ overall knowledge of federal, state and local government, with questions in all of those categories.

The Civics Bee teams are composed of middle school students, high school students and adults from each town.

The Weston team is made up of Middle School students Caroline Curley, Clara Odio, Daniel Zhu and Tobi Jonas. Weston High School students on the team are John Goulart, Adele Mah, Eli Berman and Arda Cataltepe. Pamela Fox, Vincent Rougeau, John Henry and Joe Berman are the adults on the team. Weston’s team is coached by teacher Kerry Dunne.

The Bee Master, or moderator, will be Jo-Ann Berry of the Acton Area League. Erik Owens, an associate professor at Boston College, will be the judge. Kayla Silverman, of Weston, will sing the national anthem.

The Bee is supported in part by a grant from the League of Women Voters of Massachusetts Citizen Education Fund.
