Hello High School and Middle School families,
We are following up on our message last week about Weston’s standards-based grading practices. As educators, we are constantly working to ensure that our grading is most accurate, consistent, and fair to all students. We also recognize that we need to do a better job of engaging with the community about the research based best practices we use. As we move forward, we will do so deliberately and inclusively, involving students and parents/guardians in all phases of the process. Currently we are taking a pause so that we can inform and engage the community.
We will be hosting a set of community forums over the next two weeks and encourage you to sign up to attend. At the forums, we will be specifically addressing retakes and the 50-100 grading scale. We will not be discussing grading homework, class participation, or the 0-4 grading scale as we know that these topics are more complex and require far more discussion. We will limit the number of participants in each forum to 20 to ensure that everyone is able to participate fully. You will find a list of forum dates below and a link for you to reserve your spot.
In addition, we will be establishing a grading task force with administrators, teachers, students, and parents/guardians, to review and guide our work on standards-based grading. The task force will meet regularly twice per month starting the afternoon of Thursday October 13th. In these meetings, participants will learn about the research behind standards-based grading practices, help determine and prioritize areas of focus, and create a thoughtful community engagement plan. If you are interested in joining the task force, please send a short statement of interest to email@example.com.
Together, we can build a common understanding of our grading practices that will best help all Weston students strive for excellence. We are looking forward to your continued partnership.
