A Fruitful Exchange

In November 2007, Weston welcomed a visit from Mr. Ming Li of the Luoyang Senior High School as part of the U.S.-China Principal Shadowing Project. After spending a week visiting the Weston Public Schools Mr. Li proposed a long term relationship to offer students from both countries a welcoming and educationally valuable foreign exchange experience. Superintendent Dr. Oliff and Principal Anthony Parker each visited Luoyang to confirm the program details.

In May 2009, six students and two teachers visited Weston High School from Luoyang. The visitors were hosted by students in the Mandarin language program. Luoyang students visited all Weston District schools, teaching students mini-lessons  on China. Country, Woodland, and Field school students learned morning exercises and counting. Middle and High school students practiced Mandarin conversational skills. Visiting students also enjoyed cultural activities, such as Spring Fling and kayaking the Concord River.

In April 2010, nine Weston Mandarin language students and two teachers visited Luoyang High School. Students roomed in school dorms and attended classes. They also spent time with a Chinese host family for a weekend. At the end of the trip, students spent three days touring the historical city of Xian. This trip was an excellent opportunity for Weston students to practice their language skills in an authentic environment and better understand Chinese culture.Luoyang is located in western Henan Province, abutting the provincial capital of Zhengzhou. It is approximately 200 miles east of Xi’an and 350 miles west of the Yellow Sea. Luoyang is resident to over 6.4 million people; Luoyang High School educates 5,000 students in Grades 10-12.
